Heat pumps & the BUS scheme

Can I get a grant to install an Air Source Heat Pump?

I had no idea a heat pump would make such a difference to my energy savings’!

Heat pumps are a great way of heating your home as they are extremely energy efficient. There is also a grant available from the government known as the BUS Scheme, so it’s a good time to install one, before this amazing reduction ends.

Your property will need to be heat pump ready. We will check that you are eligible for a grant and that your property will benefit from the installation of a heat pump.

Great news: there is no need to worry about applying for the grant as Malvern Solar will do this for you!

Heat pump FAQs

Q: What is a heat pump and how does it work?

Look at the diagram above. The air source heat pump works by taking in the air and heating it through compression. This heat is used to heat water for your household.

Q: How do I know if I can have a heat pump?

A: If you can answer these two questions then yes, you are eligible:

  1. Do you own your property?
  2. Is your home insulated with no advisories?

Some properties may need an upgrade to the radiators. We will advise you of this during our initial survey. We will also find your EPC rating on the government register. This tells us whether you are eligible for a grant as well as helping us to assess the suitability of your property.

Q: What is the BUS Scheme and can I apply?

A: To encourage the introduction of heat pumps, the Government has introduced a grant of £7,500 towards the full cost of Air Source Heat Pump installations. This grant is called the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, or BUS.  We will apply for this when you decide to go ahead with air source heat pump installation.

It could be a good idea to apply for this soon, whilst the grant is still available. See below for more information.

BUS scheme FAQs

To qualify for the BUS Scheme you will need to:

  1.       Own the property where the heat pump will be installed.
  2.       Consent for us to provide your name and contact details to Ofgem, the Government department who are administering the BUS scheme. Ofgem will need to verify your identity – you may need to email copies of your ID docs to Ofgem. Ofgem may contact you and/or require access to your property for audit purposes. Ofgem will contact you from the following email address – boiler.upgrade.scheme.ofgem@notifications.service.gov.uk
  3.       Ensure that your property has a valid EPC with no outstanding recommendations to install loft or cavity wall insulation. If you DO have recommendations to install loft or cavity wall insulation, then this work will need to be done before we can proceed. We can assist you with fitting loft insulation.

Q: How do I find out more about grants, and air source heat pumps?

A: Our friendly and knowledgeable team are happy to explain and answer any questions you may have.
